ATLANTA (KNX) -- Gwinnett County Board of Education that the fiction series is an ''evil'' attempt to indoctrinate children in the Wicca religion.
Victoria Sweeny, Board of Education attorney replied, that if schools were to remove all books referencing witches, then they would have to ban ''Macbeth'' and ''Cinderella.''
Sweeny adds, ''there's a mountain of evidence for keeping Harry Potter.'' She says the books don't support a particular religion, but represents a universal theme of friendship and overcoming adversity.
In June, the county's libraries board eliminated the $3,000 that was set aside to buy Spanish-language fiction in the coming year. The decision came about when one board member objected using taxpayer money to entertain readers who might be illegal immigrants.
The board revised the decision days later, and reversed it's actions amid the move saying that it was anti-Hispanic.
