Pasadena's Fork In The Road

( courtesy pasadena star news )Unless a city engineering report shows it's a public danger, the Fork in the Road will stay at the fork in the road at St. John and Pasadena avenues for at least the next six months.

City officials bowed to popular support for the 18-foot guerilla artwork that mysteriously appeared last month, stuck tines-down in a Caltrans-owned median.

"We don't want to encourage violators, (but) the Public Works Department will be out there tomorrow looking at the foundations...and will assess how it holds up," Rochelle Branch, the city's cultural affairs manager told the Arts and Culture Commission at a special meeting Wednesday night.

If the fork is structurally sound, it will be permitted to stay until May, said Branch, who has admitted to being a fan.

The giant wooden fork, painted to look like stainless steel, was an elaborate 75th birthday prank pulled by the friends of Bob Stane, owner of Altadena's Coffee Gallery Backstage. It has amused locals, attracted a few detractors, and found Internet fans as far away as New Zealand.
