Police Dog Killed in Cop Car by Heat

SAN DIEGO (AP)  -- A San Diego police dog found dead in the back of his handler's patrol car amid triple-digit temperatures died of heat stroke.

Officials with the city's Department of Animal Services on Tuesday released results of an investigation that found the 5-year-old Belgian Malinois had been left in the vehicle with the windows closed on a day when temperatures reached 108 degrees.

The dog, named Forest, was found June 20 in the patrol car parked outside the officer's home in Alpine in eastern San Diego County.

Findings of the investigation are being forwarded to the San Diego County District Attorney's office.
