Carson (CNS) -- A Union Pacific railroad conductor was seriously injured today in an accident involving a freight train and a truck in Carson, authorities said.
Firefighters were sent to the area of Wilmington Avenue and the San Diego (405) Freeway about 9:45 a.m., said Inspector Ron Haralson of the county fire department.
The injured man was freed from the wreckage within about 20 minutes and was taken to a hospital, said Inspector Ed Lozano.
Mark Davis, of Union Pacific, said the man, working as a conductor, was hospitalized in serious condition. The accident involved a truck and a railroad “hopper” car, Davis said.
According to preliminary reports, the man was outside the train, which was moving slowly, when he was struck by the truck and pinned, said sheriff’s Sgt. Dale Johnson of the Carson Station. The circumstances were under investigation.
