Palos Verdes School Evacuated

Rolling Hills Estates (CNS)  -- Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in Rolling Hills Estates was evacuated today after an inert hand grenade was found along with a note containing an unfounded claim that more of the devices could be found on campus, officials said.

The 8 a.m. find prompted authorities to evacuate the campus at 27118 Silver Spur Road and cancel classes for the day.

Students were bused to nearby Ridgecrest Intermediate School in Rancho Palos Verdes, where parents were told to pick them up, said sheriff’s Lt. Greg Ahn of the Lomita Station.

The high school principal called authorities to report finding the hand grenade – which turned out to be inert – with a note attached that said there were more of the devices on campus, Ahn said.

He said the sheriff’s bomb squad, school officials, scent dogs, and a sheriff’s patrol unit searched the campus and found no other grenades, inert or otherwise. The search was completed about 2:30 p.m., Ahn said, and local roads were reopened.

He said the sheriff’s arson/explosives detail would investigate the inert grenade that was found.
