(CBS) - It's a day to honor the men and women who have served our country in the armed forces. Special events are taking place at many communities throughout the Southland including the following:
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library will be hosting its annual Veterans Day Event which includes a C-17 flyover, a HUEY and Black Hawk Helicopter landing, a viewing of the movie "In the Shadow of the Blade", and a program honoring all branches of military. Veterans Day activities are free but regular Museum admission rates apply. Veterans and all active military members with valid ID will receive free admission to the Museum and Air Force One Pavilion on Wednesday. American Legion Post 502 and Boy Scouts plan to replace weathered flags at the Veterans Memorial at Los Angeles and Moorpark Avenues starting at 8 a.m. At 10 a.m., a ceremony will feature a presentation of a memorial wreath, keynote speaker veteran Jon Miller and refreshments at the Moorpark Veterans' Memorial, Spring Road at Flinn Avenue in Moorpark. Los Angeles City Councilmember José Huizar along with Congresswoman Lucille Roybal Allard and Assemblymember John Perez Wednesday, will pay tribute to WW II veteran and legendary Eastside activist Ross Valencia (Mr. Boyle Heights), by naming a community park in his honor. Ross Valencia died late last year and founded many community groups, including the Boyle Heights Chamber of Commerce. The park dedication will take place at 10 a.m. at the Ross Valencia Community Park (across from new Hollenbeck Police Station) 2201 E. 1st Street Los Angeles.
War veterans will lead the Bob Hope Runway Walk 2009 starting at 9 a.m. Veterans and airport employees will walk the west-east runway to inspect for loose debris or foreign object debris that could pose hazard to aircraft. The walk takes place at the Burbank Glendale-Pasadena airport authority, 2627 Hollywood Way, Burbank. Information: (818) 840-8840
The Sixth Annual San Fernando Valley Veterans Day Parade will run from 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. It will be off Laurel Canyon & Brand Blvd in San Fernando.
