SAN GABRIEL, Calif. (CBS) -- One person was killed when a small plane crashed in the heavily populated suburb of San Gabriel northeast of Los Angeles.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza crashed and caught fire shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday, killing the only person on board.
The plane departed from Brackett Field in La Verne about 25 miles east of the crash site and was on a short flight to Van Nuys.
NewsCentral's Kristine Lazar reported the plane managed to avoid homes and a bakery but could not avoid slamming into a fence.
There were no reports of injuries to anyone on the ground.
The name of the victim has not been released. But the plane is registered to David E. Flotho of Grants Pass, Ore.
Investigators from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board headed to the scene immediately after the crash, to begin looking into the cause.
