LOS ANGELES (KNX/AP) -- Temperatures are soaring again as the California heat wave heads into the weekend. Southern California Edison says it's ready to handle the extra strain on its grid from millions of air conditioning units firing up, some for the first time in 2008. The utility got through Friday with no major problems.
The weekend forecast calls for some even higher temperatures, and SoCal Edison has brought in extra crews and staff. Edison spokeswoman Vanessa McGready [mc-grady) says they don't EXPECT any problems.
Southern California wasn't the only part of the Golden State in the blast furnace. Forecasters say a massive high pressure ridge will keep the heat turned up again across a wide area of Northern California and the Bay Area.
The National Weather Service says though high temperatures will stick around throughout the weekend, there is at least some relief coming to the coastal areas.
Forecasters say thanks to increasing winds, temperatures will be slightly cooler in the North Bay and along the beaches.
The weather service says it hit 98 degrees in Oakland on Friday, breaking the previous record of 87 degrees for the day set in 1976.
San Francisco's high of 97 degrees and San Jose's high of 99 degrees were also records for the day. |
