HACIENDA HEIGHTS -- Authorities searched today for a gunman responsible for a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting on the Pomona (60) Freeway in Hacienda Heights.
The victim's driver's side rear window shattered but he was not injured by the gunfire, which was reported about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, said Lt. Steven Katz of the Los Angeles County sheriff's Industry Station.
The 20-year-old victim told deputies he was driving west on the 60 and approaching the 7th Avenue exit when he was cut off by a white Chevrolet Trailblazer Super Sport, Katz said.
The Trailblazer veered into the center emergency lane and continued west, while the victim stayed in his lane, driving alongside the Trailblazer, Katz said.
In an instant, the victim heard a single gunshot and saw a muzzle flash from the Trailblazer as his driver's side rear window shattered, Katz said.
The Trailblazer then swerved across all westbound lanes of the freeway and exited at 7th Avenue in Hacienda Heights, Katz said.
The incident appeared to have "overtones of road rage," but the victim told deputies he didn't recall provoking the driver of the Trailblazer, Katz said.
"The suspect was driving erratically and passing other vehicles erratically," Katz said. "The victim was just traveling in the same direction and didn't do anything to provoke, at least as far as what's been reported to us."
