Dick Helton joined KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO in June 1998. He currently serves KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO's Senior Political Correspondent and anchors the weekday morning news from 5 - 9:00 a.m..
Before joining KNX, Dick was a news anchor and program host for sister news station WBBM in Chicago for nearly 30 years. A 1966 honors graduate at the University of Illinois, he began his radio career in 1967 at the Illinois Radio Network as a news anchor and program host. During his career Helton has won a number of awards including Best Newscast from UPI, AP, the Illinois News Broadcasters Association and the Illinois Broadcasters Association. The Radio TV News Directors Association has also recognized him for his reporting and documentary work.
A true news veteran, Helton anchored WBBM's award-winning coverage of the 1996 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He has reported on stories ranging from the 1971 India-Pakistan War, to the French nuclear testing in the Pacific to special coverage of native Indians living in Ecuador's Andes Mountains. Finally, he hosted a variety of Chicago-based call-in shows such as "Ask the Mayor," "Ask the Governor," and "Talk to the Schools."
Helton won the prestigeous Golden Mike award for 'Best Original News Analysis' in 2008 for "Road to the White House."
Dick's hobbies include photography, amateur radio and auto racing. His wife Carol is also a broadcast journalist.
