LOS ANGELES (KNX) -- Superintendent David Brewer wants to carve out 27 high schools and 17 middle schools out of LAUSD into a new school district. The schools being targeted are some of the lowest performing in the district. Brewer wants to give the proposed school district its own superintendent, its own curriculum, and its own policies with the aim of instituting drastic reforms. Under the proposal the troubled schools would rejoin LAUSD when they improve their academic performance.
Brewer hopes to launch the district next fall. Full details of the plan are expected to be released November 1st. Brewer says that he will seek the school board's approval of his plan on November 13th.
