Blowin' In The Wind

LOS ANGELES (CBS)  -- Strong winds knocked down power lines and left about 34,000 homes and businesses in the Los Angeles region without electricity Tuesday night, utility officials said.

About 13,400 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers were without electricity as of 5 a.m., according to officials.

Power outages were also reported in Hollywood, Crenshaw, Sawtelle and Northridge.

In the San Gabriel Valley and South Bay areas, about 21,000 Southern California Edison customers were without electricity since Tuesday night said Edison spokesman Gil Alexander.

Power lines were down or damaged in the foothill communities of Monrovia, Arcadia and Altadena, as well as Manhattan Beach to Huntington Beach, Alexander said. Gusting winds were picking up debris, blowing debris against lines and snapping them, Alexander said.

The winds brought a Jack in the Box sign crashing to the ground at Sherman Way and Coldwater Canyon Boulevard in North Hollywood.

No injuries have been reported, according to Devin Gales of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Crews intended to work throughout the night but it was unclear when service would be fully restored.

Winds also caused landing problems at Los Angeles International Airport according to the National Weather Service.

One flight had to be diverted to another airport and two other flights had to use "missed approach procedures," according to Federal Aviation Administration officials.
