Airport Screening No Help Against Attacks

LOS ANGELES (KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO)  -- Those glacially-paced security lines at the airport don't make flying any safer, according to new research out of Harvard.

Eleni Lison, Elizabeth Linos, and Graham Colditz wrote in the British Medical Journal that they could find no evidence that the practice of x-raying carry-on luggage reduces attacks or prevents hijackings. The Harvard School of Public Health team also found inspection of shoes and confiscation of small items.

"Even without clear evidence of the accuracy of testing, the Transportation Security Administration defended its measures by reporting that more than 13 million prohibited items were intercepted in one year,'' the researchers wrote in the article. ''Most of these illegal items were lighters.''

"Can you hide something in your shoes you cannot hide in your underwear?" they added.

The TSA has not yet commented on the research.
